The communication below has been issued by Zurich Insurance Plc in light of the developing situation in Sri Lanka:

Issued for policies underwritten by Zurich Insurance Plc issued on or after 14th November 2018.

FCO Advice Updated: 25th April 2019

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office have updated their travel advice relating to the above incident, and are advising against all but essential travel to Sri Lanka due to the current evolving security situation.

1. If you have already purchased Travel Plus Travel Insurance and are currently in Sri Lanka:

    • You should speak to your tour operator, travel agent or air carrier in the first instance.
    • You should regularly review the FCO website for updates: FCO – Sri Lanka and follow the advice given.
    • Your Travel Plus Travel Insurance Policy will remain in force If you are unable to return home before your cover ends due to reasons outside your control for up to:
      • 14 days if your public transport is cancelled or delayed or you have cover under Section 13 Journey Disruption including Airspace closure (Optional under Essential and Premier Policies, automatically included under Premier Plus)
      • 30 days if you have been injured or are ill.
    • Terrorism cover under Section 12 will apply in respect of Emergency medical assistance and expenses, Hospital benefit and Personal Accident and (under Premier and Premier Plus policies only, Additional Travel and accommodation expenses/excursions).
    • If you have Premier Plus cover or have purchased the Optional cover under Section 13 Journey Disruption including Airspace Closure, your policy will provide cover for curtailment as a result of the Travel Advice Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issuing a directive:

    i) prohibiting all travel or all but essential travel to; or
    ii) recommending evacuation from the country or specific area or event to which you were travelling, up to the benefits amounts stated, providing the directive came into force after you had left your home to commence the trip.

    • Terrorism remains fully excluded where nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, devices or agents are used.

2. If you have already purchased Travel Plus Travel Insurance before 25th April and are due to travel to Sri Lanka:

    • You should speak to your tour operator, travel agent or air carrier in the first instance.
    • If you have Premier Plus cover or have purchased the Optional cover under Section 13 Journey Disruption including Airspace Closure, your policy will provide cover for trip being cancelled as a result of the Travel Advice Unit of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issuing a directive:

    i) prohibiting all travel or all but essential travel to; or
    ii) recommending evacuation from the country or specific area or event to which you were travelling,
    up to the benefits amounts stated, providing the directive came into force after you purchased this insurance or booked the trip (whichever is the later).

    • Zurich will not provide cover for non – essential travel to Sri Lanka. If you have purchased a single trip Essential or Premier policy and have not purchased the Optional cover under Section 13 Journey Disruption including Airspace Closure, you are able to cancel the policy with a full refund or reschedule the trip.

3. If you are considering buying a new Travel Plus Insurance policy for a trip to Sri Lanka, or have an annual Travel Plus Insurance policy and are considering booking travel to Sri Lanka, please note that we cannot provide cover for:

    • You travelling to a country or area against the advice of the Foreign Commonwealth Office or equivalent government or national authority, or the World Health Organisation
    • Circumstances known to you at the start date of your cover or at the time of booking a trip (whichever is later).
