Longstay & Gap Year Travel Insurance For Extended Trips

Longstay & Gap Year Travel Insurance is a specialist policy that is different to standard holiday insurance. It’s a tailored travel insurance policy for long, extended trips.

Not only is Longstay & Gap Year geared to those travelling for lengths of up to 18 months, who:

  • Take gap years to explore the world
  • Study or work on overseas placements
  • Travel to countries for up to five months – perhaps to stay with family abroad.

It also offers more coverage than other providers!

What does Longstay and Gap Year Travel Insurance cover?

Longstay & Gap Year Travel Insurance is great value and includes:

  • Gadget cover
  • Return home cover for up to four visits home
  • Cover for adrenaline fuelled activities, such as bungee jumps and scuba diving of up to 10 metres
  • Extensive activity cover for a broad range of work and volunteering abroad
  • Emergency medical cover and much more…

Longstay & Gap Year Cover Levels And Options

Longstay and Gap Year offers three levels of cover as follows:
• Standard – for travellers up to age 39 including core cover.
• Longstay – with extra levels of cover including departure delay, legal and gadget cover.
• Longstay Plus – like Longstay but with higher cover levels.

Plus, three extra activity packs, excess waiver and a study or work placement abroad extension are available.

Activity Cover

100 activities are included free of charge with activity pack one.

Many activities sought out during a gap year are covered on each policy. For example: diving, skiing, abseiling and the most popular activities with acceptable levels of risk. Cover for these is vital for young travellers, who tend to be quite spontaneous and look for new experiences.

For even more adventures, there are two further tiers of activity packs available. These cover many sports and occupations – over and above the standard ones – such as winter sports and ski resort occupations. Plus, family and friends at home have peace of mind knowing there’s appropriate activity cover in place!

If an activity does not appear in the Longstay & Gap Year policy speak to our team of travel insurance specialists who can suggest other cover.

Flexibility With Return Trips Home

Typically, when a traveller returns home, their travel insurance stops. However, travellers may wish to come home for Christmas to spend time with family. Otherwise, a family wedding or similar must-attend celebration can fall during an extended trip. Many travellers see some occasions as unmissable; just as long as they can pick up their adventure from where they left off!

Most specialist extended trip policies will allow one return home, regardless of the length of travel. However, Longstay & Gap Year is more generous. The standard cover allows two return visits home. At the top level of cover, this increases to four.

Also, the length of each return trip is ample. On Standard or Longstay cover, trips can be up to 21 days in duration. Plus these can be up to 31 days. In contrast, competitor policies tend to be limited to one or two weeks.

Overseas Gadget Cover For Entire Trips

Most people travel with some form of gadget, a phone, tablet, smart watch, or camera with additional lenses. These are very important for the modern traveller, as they wish to keep in touch with family back home, capture memories, research and book elements of their trip on the go, and of course, share their experiences on social media.

Standard mobile phone cover or contents cover will typically run out after 60 days outside of their home country. However, with Longstay & Gap Year, gadget cover is valid for each traveller’s entire trip, so those all-important devices are protected!

Does Longstay & Gap Year insurance cover working holidays?

Yes, cover for working abroad is included in Activity pack 1 for certain work activities such as animal sanctuary or bar work. ‘Permitted manual labour’ is also covered as part of your included activity cover, which will cover you for things like fruit picking, farm work or casual manual work, providing it does not involve the use of heavy machinery.

If you plan on studying abroad, you can also add the ‘study or work placement abroad extension’ where you will be covered for up to £6,000 of pre-paid course fees if you need to cancel or curtail your trip for covered reasons such as illness.

This cover is invaluable, particularly for young travellers, who wish to work during a gap year to increase funds or try an activity they wouldn’t normally experience.

What is usually excluded with Gap Year Travel Insurance?

We asked P J Hayman’s Product Strategy Manager, Michelle Tressler, who explained:

  • Claims for pre-existing conditions are usually excluded unless you have told the insurer about them and they have agreed to cover them. These conditions will then show on your policy schedule as being covered.
  • Activities where you have not chosen and paid for the appropriate activity pack. It’s important you check that any activity you are planning on taking part in is covered under your selected activity pack.
  • Manual work involving the use of heavy machinery is often excluded. You should check the policy wording for details of which types of work are covered under your policy.
  • There are also the usual exclusions around war or war-like activities and your involvement in a criminal act or any activity which is prohibited by the government or authorities. For confirmation, refer to FCDO travel advice for the country you’re visiting.

What does Longstay & Gap Year include cover for that our competitors do not cover?

Michelle answered, “The P J Hayman Longstay & Gap Year policy includes some unique benefits such as ‘return visits’ cover which allows you to split your journey and return home up to four times without needing to take out separate cover. This gives you flexibility to come home for key events such as birthdays and Christmas.

See the policy wording for full details on this cover.

We also offer a study and work placement abroad extension which can offer cover for course fees if you fall ill and have to cancel your trip.”

More Features of Longstay & Gap Year Travel Insurance

In line with the rest of P J Hayman’s products, Longstay & Gap Year includes an extensive amount of cover. It is designed to include all the things that travellers (young and old) are likely to need, at a reasonable cost.

Cover Features

In addition to cancellation cover, there are several key features that make it ideal for extended trips. Emergency Medical cover is provided up to £5m. This is very important when travelling overseas, particularly to countries like the United States and the Far East, when emergency medical costs can be expensive.

Stop-over Cover

When travelling long-haul, it is common for there to be some sort of stopover between connecting flights. For example, when flying to New Zealand via LA or Singapore. With Longstay & Gap Year cover is included for ‘stop-overs’ of up to seven days maximum.

24-hour Medical Emergency and Repatriation Service

For medical assistance, Healix Medical Assistance Services can be contacted in an emergency all year round. When the unexpected happens, such as a medical emergency, it’s good to be prepared. If you have a medical emergency abroad, call Healix Medical Assistance Services and refer to our simple guide to help you.

So, Why Longstay & Gap Year?

Longstay & Gap Year is intended for independent travel and is ideal for solo travellers and couples.

Longstay & Gap Year is Good Value

P J Hayman’s policies are priced competitively while providing a broad range of cover. With three tiers of cover, Longstay & Gap Year has options to suit most travellers’ needs. Additionally, the correct level of activity cover can be added, along with cover for tuition fees in a study or work abroad placement.

Cover is Provided For Senior Travellers

Gap years may commonly be perceived as the pursuit of younger age groups. However, this is no longer the case, with people increasingly considering a gap year or sabbatical in later life. The coronavirus pandemic accelerated this as many sought respite for several years of travel frustration.

Finding travel insurance for such trips can be a challenge, with most standard travel insurance policies capping trip durations at 31 or 45 days. Many travel insurance providers reduce these further for older age groups or decline cover for them entirely.

Longstay & Gap Year is the ideal travel insurance policy for anyone participating in a gap year or extended trip, up to age 75 in Europe and 69 for worldwide destinations. It gives those who are young and young at heart the freedom to travel!

The Policy Offers Flexibility

With efficient services and great value, the following cover is also included, as standard:

  • Up to £3,500 cancellation cover
  • 24/7 World Class Emergency Assistance
  • Cover for Gadgets up to £1,500 (Longstay & Longstay Plus only)
  • Cover for personal possessions and possessions delayed in transit (over 12 hours)

Do I need travel insurance for a gap year?

Taking out travel insurance is wise. Not only does it provide cover for unforeseen events when you’re abroad it also protects your trip from the moment your single trip policy is purchased. When seeking travel insurance for gap years, source tailored insurance that includes cover for medical emergencies, activities and options to return home multiple times, like Longstay & Gap Year!
