When Does Travel Insurance Actually Start
A common question we are asked is when should I start my Travel Insurance policy? The answer depends on whether you have a single or annual policy, but you should try to take out insurance as soon as you book your trip (ASAYB). Let’s look at some of the reasons you should be taking out insurance as soon as possible…
Common misconceptions
Travelers often think that they have adequate travel insurance with a GHIC (global health insurance card, formally EHIC). However, these cards only entitle you to the same health care that the locals receive in the country you’re in. In some cases, this means free treatment, but sometimes you do still have to pay. It’s important to take out appropriate travel insurance to cover for any unexpected, additional costs. It will also help protect you if you have to cancel the trip or stay longer, something the GHIC won’t cover.
Another common misconception is that you are adequately covered with your bank’s travel insurance. If for example you are going on an adventurous holiday, most standard bank insurance doesn’t cover unusual activities. Bank and other benefit packaged travel insurance policies often offer basic cover limits. If your trip is expensive, it may not be fully protected. Finally, a very common issue, is that they do not cover medical conditions. If you have pre-existing medical conditions, you should look at a specialist travel insurance to cover you for any unforeseen illness, and anything related to your pe-existing conditions.
Can I cover the cost of any accidents myself?
Another common question is whether it’s most cost-effective to cover anything that may come up yourself. In 2024, the government found some average claim costs to show how much medical treatment abroad may cost. For example, falling and breaking your leg in Spain can cost you around £25,000. While having a stomach bug and needing hospital treatment in the USA can cost you over £150,000. It’s hard to imagine medical bills going that high, but it’s better to be safe than sorry. Plus, travel insurance covers you for cancellation, costs incurred if you have to stay abroad for medical reasons and much more.
Single trip start dates
For a single trip policy, you can usually take these out up to a year in advance. When getting a quote, input the dates of your trip and you will be covered from when you take out the insurance to when you return. This means if you have only paid a deposit, you will continue to be covered as you pay further instalments. Another thing to consider is that this can contribute to the cost of your policy. If your trip is in a year’s time, this will be more expensive than insuring a trip that’s only a week away. This is simply because you have more time on cover.
Annual multi-trip start dates
Annual multi-trip policies are slightly different. For these policies, the start date you select is the actual date the cover starts. Normally you can start annual policies up to 31 days in advance. If you choose not to start the policy for two weeks after buying, you will not be covered for anything that happens between taking out the policy and the start date. If for example you have a trip booked and paid for and you are no longer able to attend due to illness, you will not be covered if your policy has not started yet. Whereas if you start the policy when you take out the insurance, you will have cover.
What if my medical changes after I take out a policy?
If you have a change to your health after taking out a policy, you should check your policy documents to see what you need to do. If your policy has an ongoing health warranty like our Free Spirit policy, you will need to make us aware. It may be we need to update the policy to ensure you continue to have full cover, or in some cases we can just make note of your changes. Whatever it is, you should inform your insurer to ensure your policy stays valid.
