The Price of Travel Insurance
If you’ve recently questioned the price of travel insurance, our knowledgeable team has some insights to share. Travel insurance may look expensive; however, there are reasons for the price you may be asked to pay. Especially when looking closer at what cover should be included in your policy.
Travel insurance is there to cover the cost of unforeseen events, which may affect your trip while away or before leaving home, such as becoming unwell and being unable to go on your trip, travel disruption, or an unexpected medical emergency while you are away.
To provide an understanding of the price of travel insurance, we’ve uncovered the average costs and what levels of cover you might consider having on your travel insurance policy. We’ll also highlight what affects the price of insurance below. Read on to find out more.
How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?
The cost of a travel insurance policy can vary significantly depending on the individual. To give you an idea of costs, a couple aged 50 and 51 going to Spain for two weeks can get a single trip quote with our Venturesure policy for £36.04 and an annual policy for £99.51*. However, the price of travel insurance depends on many factors, including the specific cover you require for medical conditions or optional extras. For example, if you need winter sports cover for a skiing trip, or if you are going on a cruise and need cruise-specific cover.
Can You Get Cheaper Travel Insurance With Your Bank?
You may have travel insurance bundled in with your bank account, which may appear inexpensive or ‘free’; however, it’s wise to read the policy’s wording in detail to check for hidden exclusions and cover limits. If more than a basic level of cover is needed for medical conditions or optional extras such as covering an adventurous trip, you may be left unknowingly without adequate cover. While on the surface you might think you’re saving money, you could be left out of pocket and disappointed!
On balance, most travel insurance policies should cover you for cancellation and curtailment cover from £1,000 – £5,000 per person but what if your holiday costs are more than this? We suggest you check out Top Up My Cancancellation Cover (TUMC), which allows you to top up your current travel insurance policy up to £50,000 per person, with an overall limit of £100,000 per policy. The existing travel insurance policy doesn’t even need to be with P J Hayman, so you can use it to top up your packaged bank account travel insurance.
Do I Need Insurance For Medical Conditions?
If a traveller is living with pre-existing medical conditions, they’ll need to be even more cautious about the cover they have, because some policies can exclude cover for existing medical conditions. Be sure to check this out so you don’t end up paying a hefty medical bill abroad. If you have a related medical issue while away and it’s not covered, you’ll be liable for all medical and associated bills.
If you do require cover for a medical condition, our Free Spirit policy specialises in covering anything from minor to more serious conditions such as cancer and heart conditions.
In 2025, 95% of medical condition quotes completed at P J Hayman HQ were accepted, and cover was offered. We believe that no matter your medical condition or disability, you should have the freedom to travel, with confidence. Last year, we helped 39,321 people to do so!
Still not sure? Check out some of our reviews from happy Free Spirit customers:
‘Excellent company to deal with, the gentleman I spoke to was very helpful, and the whole process was done very smoothly. The price for my insurance was excellent. I have been with this company for about sixteen years now and would never use anyone else.’ (E Lawson)
What is the average cost of travel insurance for a cruise?
To give you an idea of costs, we’ve researched the average price of a Free Spirit Cruise policy to travel around the Caribbean (Worldwide) and compared it to the price of a cruise around the Mediterranean (Europe).
You’ll notice that the average price for travel insurance to cruise around the Caribbean is nearly three times the price to cruise around the Mediterranean. This is because if you’re on a cruise and require medical treatment, you’ll potentially need an air ambulance to take you to the nearest mainland USA state hospital, and medical costs in the USA have increased significantly over the last few years.
Therefore, the true cost of falling ill abroad can be substantial (in the tens and thousands of pounds). Especially if you find yourself in a USA state hospital where the average cost of medical expenses and repatriation costs are £157,246.69, an eyewatering sum which most people would not be able to afford. So, taking out travel insurance for a cruise is a no-brainer.
