The most common medical conditions declared in 2025
- Hypertension/high blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Asthma
- Arthritis
- Diabetes
High blood pressure
More than one in three adults in the UK is thought to suffer from high blood pressure/hypertension. It’s not hard to see why it’s among the most common medical conditions screened for. For our Travel Plus policy, high or controlled blood pressure is on the accepted conditions list. This means that you do not have to declare it, and cover will be provided. While our Free Spirit policy can cover it, it must be declared. When high blood pressure itself can be managed through medication, it can lead to several serious conditions. These include the risk of a heart attack or stroke. This is why you should look for travel insurance for high blood pressure.
Ensure you have enough medication for your trip. Speak with your medical professional and get enough medication to cover the length of your trip as your policy will not cover additional medication if you knowingly don’t take enough with you. Your blood pressure should be under control when you book your trip, take out insurance and at the time you travel.
Cholesterol levels
High or controlled cholesterol is another commonly screened medical condition. Even if your cholesterol level is stable and under control because of any medication you’re on, it will need to be declared. It’s important to note that as cholesterol levels increase, so does the chance of related complications such as heart and circulatory conditions. If you have travel insurance covering your cholesterol, it will also cover any emergency medical costs should you need this whilst on your trip.
Asthma
Over eight million people in the UK receive treatment for asthma, a condition which has varying levels of severity. For some, it can be a life-threatening condition. There are also many different asthma triggers, such as pollen, a cold environment or the flu. That’s why it is so important to take out travel insurance to cover your asthma. If the place you’re going to triggers a flare-up, you need to have adequate cover in place.
Refer to the Asthma & Lung UK website, which has a handy holiday checklist to help you prepare for a trip or the Free Spirit website for top tips for travelling with asthma.
Arthritis
There are many different types of arthritis, but arthritis in general is a commonly covered medical condition. In the UK, there are approximately 10 million people living with some form of arthritis. Essentially, it’s inflammation in the joints. This can be caused by several things such as injury, age, gender, lifestyle and more.
Sometimes flare-ups come up with no warning for arthritis, which is why you need to make sure you have travel insurance to cover you. That’s where Free Spirit can help you to travel, with confidence. Travel Plus also covers specific types of arthritis under the Accepted Conditions list.
Diabetes
There are two main types of diabetes – type 1 and 2, as well as gestational diabetes, which can occur during pregnancy. You may also suffer from conditions relating to diabetes, such as high blood pressure or nerve damage. When you declare your specific type of diabetes on our Free Spirit policy, the quoting system will ask relevant questions to find out whether you have any related conditions. This will ensure that you also have cover in place for the complications of diabetes.
Make sure you look at where you’re travelling to and whether you need any special permission from your GP to take your medicine into the country. They will also be able to advise on adjusting when you take your insulin or other medication if crossing time zones.
