Our History

We’ve won awards in the past and this year we are delighted to have been nominated for Schemes Insurer of the Year at the UK broker Awards. This national awards ceremony, hosted by Insurance Age, will take place on Thursday, 9th October 2025, in Birmingham, following the Broker Expo.

Since 2015, we’ve supported The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans with our Free Spirit policy by providing them with specialist travel insurance. The policy has given WWII veterans the freedom to attend trips, concerts, fundraising events and commemoration ceremonies across the UK, Holland, Belgium, and France. So, as we’re passionate about assisting veterans, we were delighted to support Southwick Revival again for the 80th anniversary of VE Day. This year the annual charity event raised £75,000.

We’re not only a Travel Insurance Broker that provides specialist travel insurance policies. With our Free Spirit policy, we’ve supported small and local charities such as The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans. As we’re passionate about assisting veterans, we were delighted to support Southwick Revival. 2024 was the 80th anniversary of D-Day.

We were delighted to share some excellent news. P J Hayman was shortlisted once again the 2024 National Insurance Awards in the Travel Insurance category.

We created a new P J Hayman website which showcases our brand image, personality, values, vision and mission.

We were thrilled to be awarded Personal Lines Specialist Broker of the Year at the National Insurance Awards 2023 on Thursday 9th March.

We rebranded to re-energise the business and our team as the world reopened for travel.

Post pandemic, as the world reopened, we created a small social committee team who now organises a range of events throughout the year for the P J Hayman team. These include a summer BBQ as well as events that lead up to Christmas Day.

50+ travel insurance schemes were developed, which include Open Travel Insurance for The Women’s Institute and the NHS Retirement Fellowship Travel Scheme (NHSRF).

Despite the pandemic we won Personal Lines Broker of the Year.

Due to the popularity of staycations during the lock downs we created Staycationplan. We continue to provide cover for UK trips.

We were shortlisted in the Schemes Broker of the Year category at the Insurance Age’s UK Broker Awards.

Top Up My Cover (TUMC) was created by PJH It is still unique and flexible today. Brokers, clients and partners like its simplicity.

P J Hayman joined aggregator price comparison site – Money Supermarket – to showcase 24/7 Travel Insurance.

P J Hayman became part of Crispin Speers Ltd.

International terrorism attacks have led us to use our strong expertise to create and enhance a range of specialist products to cover a wide range of hard-to-place risks.

We’ve been through all sorts of challenges over our 32 years in business – not least of which was 9/11. One of our policies looked after a customer, while stranded in America due to the terrorist attacks. We paid out for his extra six days spent in the USA and he was both grateful and surprised.

At the dawn of the millennium, we embraced some technological changes, such as the creation of P J Hayman’s first website. Also, we innovated from phone web to PC systems – called Delta – to capture customer’s requirements and quotes. As we celebrated 10 years in business, we moved to Stansted house.

Our earliest products included Travel Plus and Adventures – both of which are still very much part of our portfolio. Free Spirit was aquired in 2003 and is our largest seller.

P J Hayman & Company was founded by Peter Hayman and was first based in Petersfield, Hampshire. The 2.5 roomed offices were home to a Claims Manager, PA, Accounts Personal, Sectary, as well as PJH.

We’ve always had core products and have worked alongside brokers since the beginning, the first were Bowhills and Meon Travel. Our first product was on one sheet of A4, called ‘P J Hayman Travel Insurance’.
