Top 10 Places to Visit in the Asia Pacific

The Asia Pacific region, or ‘APAC’, is a term used to describe a sprawling area of the world. In general, it refers to countries around the Western Pacific Ocean. This includes places like East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia and Oceania. For 2026, we’re going to take a look at the top places you can go to in the Asia Pacific region. Let us inspire your new year trips…

How many countries are there in the Asia Pacific region? Depending on where you look, the region incorporates anywhere from 40–50 countries. Here are some of the top ones you can visit:

  1. French Polynesia
  2. Maldives
  3. Japan
  4. Canada
  5. Australia
  6. Thailand
  7. China
  8. Cook Islands
  9. Fiji
  10. India

French Polynesia

According to a recent study carried out by ABTA, the Pacific Islands (including French Polynesia) are a trending long-haul destination. The study showed a significant increase in people travelling there in the last year, with more set to head off to the area in 2026. Made up of 121 islands, you will not be short of things to do here. In particular, the capital city of Papeete is a must-see destination.

Papeete is known for its impressive market, which offers customers a wide range of exotic fruits and unusual cuisines. Try a local delicacy before going to visit the Notre Dame Cathedral. This beautiful yellow church is the oldest on the island and is well worth the visit. Then, to relax, head to nearby Plage de Toaroto – a white sand beach with clear blue seas. It’s the ideal way to spend a sunny afternoon. Don’t forget your suntan lotion!

Maldives

The Maldives has long been a popular tourist destination in the Asia Pacific thanks to its famous beaches with their crystal-clear water. If you’re looking for the ultimate relaxing, romantic break this is the spot for you. There are ways to do the Maldives on a budget, but it’s often a destination of choice for those seeking a luxury holiday. With desirable attractions on offer such as overwater bungalows – accommodation raised on short stilts above shallow lagoons – and underwater restaurants, the price of the holiday can creep up. Don’t forget to take out a Top Up insurance to cover those additional costs.

To experience a unique phenomenon, head to Vaadhoo Island. This is the most well-known island in the Maldives for spotting the ‘sea of stars’. Visiting Vaadhoo between June and October is the best time to spot the bioluminescent plankton that light up the sea at night. Make sure you head to a spot along the beach where there is little or no light pollution for the best chance to see them. You’ll think you’re looking up at the stars rather than gazing down into the sea!

Japan

The Asia Pacific region also contains Japan. While it’s not known for its relaxing beaches, it’s not to be overlooked as a holiday destination. Japan is soaring in popularity, so when is the best time to visit? April and May are the best months to see the glorious cherry blossom trees. However, the cost of the trip will be higher than at other times of year as this is an incredibly popular time to visit. Instead, consider a trip here in September to November when the leaves are starting to fall. The Autumn colours are still beautiful, the weather is still warm, and it is less busy. Be sure to keep an eye on the weather, as the Autumn months do fall in the typhoon season, but major cities are well-equipped to deal with this.

Travelling in Autumn is the ideal time to explore Japan’s ancient temples and historical sites. With fewer crowds, you can take your time and immerse yourself in the culture of these fascinating places. In particular, the ‘Fushimi Inari Taisha’ in Kyoto, which is famed for its tall red gates, is a must-see for your itinerary.

Canada

Immerse yourself in nature at the next Asia Pacific location, Canada. Known for its glorious mountains and lakes, this is the perfect place to embrace the outdoors. Fly into Calgary International Airport and then take a shuttle bus to Banff National Park. There are several accommodation options in the national park, so you can stay in the heart of the action. Take a sunrise tour to Moraine Lake and then Lake Louise for the most breathtaking views. The bright blue waters will make the early start worth it!

Australia

We’re heading down under for this next Asia Pacific region. It might take between 22–26 hours to get to Australia, but it’s definitely worth it. As this is a long-haul destination, it’s the perfect reason to take an extended trip and spend more time here. Our Longstay & Gapyear policy can cover trips up to 18 months long, so you don’t have to stress!

Why not master a new skill while you’re here? Turn this into a unique SPIN (special interest) holiday and add to your range of abilities while travelling. Surfing is a very popular pastime in Australia, even if you’re a beginner. Go in Autumn for a less busy season, but still warm climates. Then learn the art of surfing on the famous Bondi Beach!

Thailand

Thailand has soared in popularity in recent years so if you’re heading to the Asia Pacific region, this should be at the top of your list. Known for tropical beaches, Buddhist temples and blossoming wildlife, there is something here for everyone.

Before you look to travel here, it’s important to check the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice. Back in December 2025, there was some disruption along the border between Thailand and Cambodia. Even if you’re not travelling near the border, you should make sure your travel is safe before making any plans.

China

If China isn’t at the top of your Asia Pacific bucket list, it should be. Of course, there are the more famous landmarks such as the Great Wall or the Terracotta Warriors. While these are unmissable destinations for your itinerary, there are some more unique excursions you could consider, too.

Travelling in winter is the only time to visit Harbin Ice-snow World, located in Heilongjiang. This unique park is remade from scratch every year, as everything it contains is made from ice. Marvel at the enormous, illuminated ice sculptures. Wrap up warm and take a ride on one of the giant ice slides, before taking a bracing walk in the chilly air along a frozen path under an ice-sculpted bridge. This is definitely an unusual and spectacular attraction to check out if you’re heading to China.

Cook Islands

The Cook Islands are the ideal place for a sunny holiday. Take a trip to Rarotonga, one of the fifteen islands that make up this territory. Here, you will find Tikioki, also known as the Fruits of Rarotonga, which is one of many marine reserves along the coast. This is the perfect spot to try snorkelling with some of the island’s exotic fish and wildlife species. Our Adventures policy can provide cover for hundreds of different activities, so you can enjoy worry-free sea-life encounters!

If you don’t fancy getting close up with the fish, take a visit to the Marine and Wildlife Eco Centre. They help to rehabilitate and rescue hundreds of different animals. So, you will get to see a diverse range of creatures, as well as learning about the island and much more besides.

Fiji

Made up of hundreds of islands, Fiji is a tropical paradise you should visit at least once, or more if possible! Taveuni is Fiji’s the third largest island. It is known as the ‘Garden Isle’, boasting lush rainforest, many waterfalls and exotic wildlife. If you want somewhere to explore, the Bouma National Heritage Park covers 150 square kilometres – there’s plenty of space to roam! Take a swimming costume with you and go waterfall hunting in this tropical utopia.

While you’re here, make sure you find the Waitavala water slide. As the name suggests, it’s a natural waterslide that will appeal to adventure seekers. Make sure you wear some protective clothing, just in case there are any bumps or sharp rocky edges you brush against along the way. You can also book guided day trips to these waterfalls to avoid any risk of getting lost trying to find them in this Asia Pacific paradise.

India

If you’re planning a trip to India, there is one place that should be at the top of your list. The iconic Taj Mahal is not to be missed. Make sure you buy tickets in advance to avoid some of the queues. It also means you won’t be fooled by some of the non-genuine tour guide offers when you arrive. Make sure you pack light for a day trip here, as large bags aren’t allowed inside. Carry a small bag with essentials like money and your phone. Food or items such as lipstick will be confiscated.

Finally, take a wild adventure to spot India’s ‘big five’ – tigers, elephants, leopards, sloth bears and guar (Indian bison). With lots of national parks to choose from, there are hundreds of safari tours on offer. Experience being up close with some big animals, from the safety of a safari truck.
