How Does Top Up My Cover Work?
With the cost of going on holiday steadily rising, it’s important to be aware of the top-up cover options out there if you have to cancel or curtail (cut short) your holiday. Most travel insurance policies will cover you for cancellation and curtailment up to around £5,000 per person. But what do you do if your holiday costs are more than this? Let’s take a look at how P J Hayman can help…
What Is Top Up My Cover?
Our Top Up My Cover policy is designed to literally ‘top up’ your existing insurance. It can top up your cancellation and curtailment cover by up to £50,000 per person with an overall policy limit of £100,000. If you require more cancellation cover than this, we can also look into providing you with a quote for our high value cancellation cover policy.
This policy is unique because it can’t be used as a standalone insurance. In order for this product to work, you must have an ordinary travel insurance policy in place already. In effect, the top up policy acts like a bolt-on cash ‘wallet’ that supplements your main travel insurance. We do not need to ask for any medical history for the top up product – as long as your main insurer is covering you for the dates of your trip, we will as well.

Am I Eligible?
To be eligible for the top-up policy, you must be aged 85 or under and have a main travel insurance policy in place that covers you for at least £1,000 cancellation and curtailment cover per person. The top up my cover premium cost will be based on how much additional cover you need, your age, and how far ahead your trip dates are. If you are aged under 75, you can take out cover of up to £50,000 per person. For customers aged 75 to 79, the limit is £15,000 per person, and for those aged 80 to 85, it’s £10,000.
This policy will only top-up single trips, so even if you have an annual travel insurance policy, we will need the dates of the specific trip you require the top-up for. This way, we can be specific with how much additional cover you require for each trip you go on.
If there are two of you wanting to be covered on the same top-up policy, this is fine so long as you are both named on your main insurance policy. If you have separate main insurances, we will need to provide your top-up cover separately. That way, if you have different cover limits on your main insurances, we can input these on your respective top up policies. If the event of a claim, we would need settlement letters from both of your main insurers, indicating that all of your cancellation and curtailment cover on these policies had been used up, before processing your claim for additional cover on your top up policies.
When Should I Take Out The Top Up Cover?
Please bear in mind that this policy has a 7-day waiting period. This means that from the moment you purchase the policy, you will have 7 days before it comes into effect. When doing a quote, we require the trip dates: for example, if the departure date is in 6 months’ time, you will be covered for cancellation and curtailment once the 7-day waiting period is over. So, if anything happens before you go, or after you leave your home to embark on your trip, you will be covered. The cost of going on holiday has increased by 11.5% in 2025, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Which Policies Does It Top Up?
Whether you have a P J Hayman travel insurance policy or one from another insurance provider, we can top it up. As previously mentioned, you must have at least £1,000 of cancellation and curtailment cover per person on your main policy for us to offer the top-up. It doesn’t matter how much additional cover you have above this amount, but that is the minimum requirement.
If you have an annual policy that will expire before your planned trip, as long as you have a new insurance policy in place to cover your trip dates at the time of purchasing the top-up this isn’t a problem. Your main policy must provide cover for the specific parameters of the trip, such as the correct geographical location and maximum trip duration.
What Happens If I Need To Make a Claim?
In the event that you need to go down the claims route for your top-up cover, we will first need to contact your main insurer. Once they have paid out the full cancellation/curtailment amount from your main policy, we will require the settlement letter from them in order to make a claim on the top-up policy. It is crucial to ensure that your main policy fully covers you for any circumstances that could lead to a claim, as the top-up cover will only pay out if your main insurer has settled your initial claim. If the amount of compensation required doesn’t exceed your main travel insurance limits, you will not need to contact the top-up policy claims handlers.
