Top Runcation Adventure Holidays
The latest travel trend sprinting into view in 2026 is the ‘runcation’. So, what is a runcation? This is an emerging trend where your holiday focuses on running. For example, you might be travelling to take part in a marathon or endurance activity. We have some great runcation inspiration for you below…
Firstly, it’s important to know your fitness limit. It may be tempting to head off on a challenging, long-distance run and get your endorphins flowing, but you need to be aware of your physical capabilities. If you’re a beginner-level runner and new to runcations, you can still have a good time without overdoing it.
Begin in North Carolina
The southern US state of North Carolina is the ideal runcation destination for all skill levels. The bustling city of Asheville in Buncombe County is surrounded by the rolling peaks of the Appalachian Mountains. This rustic setting offers scenic routes through rugged natural surroundings that you can explore at your leisure. These include ridge trails, riverside runs and forest treks. As the area offers a mix of high elevation runs and calmer routes, this is a very popular running spot for all ability levels. Before you go, you can find routes to suit you, sorting by highest/lowest elevation or longest/shortest routes. Travelling here in spring means you will see all of the budding flora along the trails, and hopefully the weather won’t be too hot!
Run through the Italian Dolomites
For a more challenging runcation, head off to the Italian Dolomites. Located in the northeastern area of the country, this mountain range takes its name from the carbonate mineral dolomite found in the rocky peaks. When light reflects off of the carbonate in the slopes, it gives the mountains a red to purple hue, which provides spectacular sunset views.
The trails here are mostly elevated, so make sure you are physically ready for this vacation. This hut-to-hut experience will have you out on the range for a week exploring. Your guide will take you through the trails, as you run through meadows, ridges and passes. Your baggage will be transported to the accommodation for you. This will save any extra strain! While this runcation may be challenging, the views will be spectacular. Each evening you’ll stay at a ‘rifugio’ – an Italian mountain ‘hut’ that’s actually more like a comfortable lodge – and be treated to a delicious dinner after a hard day’s running. In the morning, gaze out of the window at the beautiful mountain views while enjoying a complimentary breakfast. What’s not to like?
Marathon running in Rio
The Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro is renowned for its extravagant Carnival, but it also attracts runners from all over the world for a yearly marathon race. This year, it takes place in June to avoid the peak summer heat.
On the first day of your Rio Marathon runcation itinerary, you can spend your time enjoying some sight-seeing. Take a cable car up to Sugar Loaf Mountain at sunset, or admire the impressive statue of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain. Finish the day with a dip in the ocean at the famous Copacabana beach. On day two, you’ll begin your running. After breakfast, this will entail a 10K run to get you warmed up.
Day three features a half-marathon, which you can either join in with or just watch and cheer everyone on. On day four, it’s time to take part in the Rio Marathon. Know your limits and do your best here. In the evening, rest your tired legs and unwind with a post-race celebration, which will be included in your experience. This runcation itinerary is designed to help you get the most out of your Rio de Janeiro trip. Don’t forget to take out our Adventures travel insurance to cover yourself for marathon running.
Experience a Disney Runcation
If you have a family of fitness enthusiasts, this next runcation could be ideal for you and your children. You may have considered going to Disneyland Paris for a fun, family holiday, but did you know that they host run weekends too? Choose from a 5K, 10K, or kids race. The kids’ race is for children under 12 and everyone gets a Disney Event Finisher medal to take home.
If you think a 10K is a little too easy, you find that they also offer tougher race challenges to compete in. If you complete both a 10K and a half-marathon race, you’ll be awarded an exclusive 31K medal. Then if you also finish a 5K, you’ll get a 36K Challenge commemorative medal! All of these events take place at Disneyland Paris, but if you want to go further afield, both Disneyland California and Disney World Florida in the USA offer their own run experiences!
One of the benefits of these runcations is that as the races begin very early in the morning, you get to explore the Disney park before it opens to the general public for the day. As mentioned earlier, you’ll also receive a special Disney medal, as well as a T-shirt, programme guide and post-race refreshments, depending on the race you choose. You can then spend the rest of your day getting even more steps in by walking around the park and enjoying the attractions!
Take the scenic route in Hawaii
Often dubbed the most scenic marathon in the world, it’s no surprise the Maui marathon made an appearance on our list. The second-largest Hawaiian island, Maui is known as the ‘Valley Isle’ due to its central valley located between two volcanoes. Stunning beaches and lush tropical rainforest locations attract visitors all year round.
The marathon takes place in April 2026, but there are several race options to choose from to suit runners. Whether you want to do a 5K, 10K, half-marathon or an actual marathon, you have the choice! A unique feature of this particular runcation is that the races all take place on the same day. Whether you are taking part in the full marathon or just the 10K race, all competitors end their race together at the same finishing line. Whichever option you choose, you’ll be running along the coast of Western Maui, taking in the stunning sea views. When you’ve completed the race, spend the rest of your runcation exploring nature in the island’s tropical nature reserve.
Search for Nessie in Scotland
Scotland hosts the Loch Ness marathon every year, where you follow a route along the famous Loch Ness. While we can’t get guarantee that you’ll get a glimpse of the loch’s elusive, legendary sea monster, we can confirm that you’ll finish the run in Inverness. This vibrant location is the capital city of the Highlands, where you’ll find lots of activities and celebrations taking place. The region also hosts other popular running events such as the River Ness 10K and 5K. As well as offering competitive challenges, it’s also the perfect way to explore the UK countryside on a unique stay/runcation trip.
