What’s Trending in Travel and Tourism?
It’s that time of year again when we look at the predicted trends to sweep the travel and tourism market in 2025. These have been shared by experts so they can be relied upon.
From lunar eclipses to detour destinations, find your next experience for 2025 here…
Notice Some Natural Phenomena’s
According to a recent trend report, 2025 is the year to seek out natural phenomenon experiences. Visit the Lapland region in Finland to try and catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. You may remember parts of the UK in 2024 got to see the Aurora borealis but this is an extremely rare occurrence. If you weren’t fortunate enough to see them in the UK, why not sleep under the stars in Finland for the best chance to spot them.
Another top natural phenomenon to catch is the ‘Black Sun’ in Denmark. This is where you get to watch hundreds of thousands of starlings migrate during the spring and autumn months. Spend the evening in the marshland and watch as the sky turns black with these birds.
Make sure you plan some astro adventures in 2025. There will be four eclipses to look forward to during the year so now is the time to plan ahead. The first eclipse is a lunar eclipse which will occur in March, this is where the earth casts a shadow on the moon. While you may see part of the eclipse from the UK, it will be visible from start to finish in the USA. Why not get ahead of this travel trend, and try to see it for yourself!
Detour Destinations
A new trend taking the travel and tourism industry by storm is detour destinations. People are now venturing to lesser-known locations and avoiding overcrowded hotspots. For example, head to Vilnius, Lithuania instead of Barcelona. As Lithuania’s capital city, Vilnius has everything you could want for a cultural break. The beautiful cobblestone streets are the perfect place to admire intricate architecture without the crowds.
During the summer months, we’re also ditching destinations in Southern Europe affected by heatwaves. Instead, we’re taking a detour and venturing to cooler locations, such as Canada and Scandinavian countries like Norway. If you can holiday outside of the school holidays, travel during the shoulder seasons. This is a great way to escape the busy crowds and hefty price tags!
Food Getaway Experiences
Another rising trend in travel and tourism is the spike in people planning their holidays around food. Whether it’s pizza in Pisa, gyros in Greece, or pad thai in Thailand, there’s a food experience out there for everyone. Try something new in Djerba, Tunisia where they are starting a project called ‘The flavours of Djerba’. They aim to put the olive tree and its products at the heart of Tunisia’s tourism. This is an ideal location to get you off the beaten track and immersed in culinary delicacies.
Solo travel, otherwise known as the rise of the ‘me-mooners’ is one of the most popular trends in travel and tourism to date. Don’t let travelling alone stop you from enjoying the local cuisines. Head to Palermo, Italy for a unique food experience with the Duchess of Palma. You will get to see where the ingredients come from and pick fresh herbs from the gardens. Work alongside the Duchess as you help to make (and eat) their traditional dishes such as swordfish rolls.
Sustainable Travel
2025 is also the year that we celebrate 200 years of train travel. With staycations becoming more popular, you could explore some of the UK on the train. Slow travel is the art of immersing yourself fully in travel, exploring and unwinding at a steady pace. Explore the countryside on a luxury steam train and unwind with a cream tea in the carriage.
Who said train travel couldn’t be an experience? Gone are the days when transport was just about getting from A to B, now we can see some of the best views right from the train window. One of the top train experiences is the Glacier Express in Switzerland which takes you through the snowy Swiss Alps. You will be taken near the source of the Rhine River, which is nearly 7,000ft high! From here, you will get to see the Rhine Valley which is dubbed the ‘Grand Canyon of Switzerland’. Plus, take advantage of the onboard snack trolley and meal service for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Collective and shared experiences
A new trend hitting the travel and tourism market is game vacationing. 21% of travellers are now inspired to book a holiday after seeing it in their favourite game. Plus, with gaming-inspired events popping up all over the world, it’s no wonder people want to get out there and experience them. For example, step into the world of Grand Theft Auto in Los Santos, California. Experience first-hand the sun-soaked city and get a bite to eat at your favourite restaurant in the game or go downtown for a bit of shopping.
If video games aren’t your thing, why not try ‘set-jetting’, which is where you jet off to visit your favourite TV setting. If Game of Thrones is something you enjoy, visit Croatia and Iceland to feel like you’ve stepped right into Kings Landing. The red-roofed buildings in Croatia are sure to feel familiar and this is an underrated destination that should be on your bucket list.
