Top Bike Parks and Resorts For Mountain Biking
Mountain biking is quickly becoming a popular travel trend. Similar to runcations, where fitness is at the heart of your holiday, only this time with bikes. Whether you are just starting out or are a mountain biking pro, there will be a holiday to suit you.
Have you ever considered what activities are covered on your travel insurance? We have put together some of the top mountain bike parks you can go to in the world, plus we have the insurance to match. Let’s dive in…
Try the largest mountain biking park in Scandinavia
Sweden is home to Are Bike Park, home to 853 vertical meters for mountain biking descents. In the winter, they welcome visitors to their 89 ski slopes and in the summer, you’ll find 39 trails to take your mountain biking to the next level. They have lots of trail options with 7 green, 11 blue, 11 red and 10 black ones to choose from, depending on your skill level. Green represents some of the easier tracks, and black represents the most challenging.
To save you the trouble of transporting your own bike, they offer a rent-a-bike service. Your bike will be equipped for downhill rides, fully cushioned with appropriate shock absorbers and safety gear, all of which is included in the rental. There are several accommodation options available too, so you can find a package to suit you.
Head to New Zealand for the Old Ghost Road
The Old Ghost Road is the longest singletrack ride in New Zealand. This track is recommended for intermediate mountain biking due to the challenging nature of the course. There are various spots along the way to stop and camp or stay for the night but make sure to book in advance. It will take you approximately 3 days to complete the 85km route.
The highlights of this mountain bike track are the mix of waterfalls, forest and spectacular views. You will stop by ‘heaven’s door’, a lookout spot over the mountainous landscape around you. Keep an eye out on your way for Wekas, a native bird – be careful, though, they will pinch anything you leave out!
Les Gets mountain biking in France
Les Gets is the biggest bike park in Europe, so definitely one to add to your mountain biking list. You may have heard of them as they organised the MTB World Cup Finals in 2019, 2020 and 2021. Plus, the World Championships in 2022. The park is suitable for riders of all skill levels and even bike types. They have bike tracks for electric mountain biking, downhill biking, and cross-country.
Make sure you follow their safety instructions. If you need to stop, do so next to the trail. Check the trail before descending to work out the best descent strategy. Choose your level, be honest with yourself and don’t attempt an advanced track if you are a beginner.
Always make sure you have appropriate travel insurance. If not, and you’re already abroad, you’re in luck! Our Adventures policy can cover the activity.
Visit Whistler Blackcomb, Canada
You’ll be spoilt for choice at the Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Biking Park. They boast over 120 trails spread over 4 mountain zones. Like many bike parks, there are a variety of trails with differing ability levels, from beginners to experts; there is something for everyone. What’s interesting about this park is that you can sign up for their ‘bike school’. Don’t worry, these are suitable for all ages with classes tailored to children, teens and adults. Make an evening of it and join one of their ‘women’s nights’ or ‘men’s nights’ where you will learn the basics and get to socialise with other like-minded people.
Go mountain biking in the Sierra Nevada
We can’t talk about mountain biking holidays without mentioning the Sierra Nevada. A ski and mountain resort located in the south of Spain with one of its top attractions being the 75km descent trail to the beach. To make this park even more unique, they offer a ‘bike & board’ package. This gives you 2.5 days of skiing and 2 days of mountain biking, so you get the best of both worlds.
Another benefit of this location is that the mountain bike climbs are almost fully shuttled – so you will go up to the top in one of their vans. This means you get more time doing the fun bit – going down the tracks! The beautiful views will make it worthwhile, and on an average day, you will enjoy 3000m – 5000m of vertical descent.
Get out and about closer to home
If you want a mountain biking holiday a bit closer to home, try Scotland. Known for its luscious countrysides and open spaces this is the perfect spoke for a bike park. In particular, the Achnashellach route has beautiful scenery as you make your way through the hills alongside Loch Dughaill. Once you reach the top and cross through the peaks of Ben Liath Mhor and Sgorr Rudh, you will then experience 7km of downhill riding. Keep your eye out for waterfalls on the way down and ride carefully – this is a single track with rocky drops on the way back.
Take out appropriate travel insurance
Mountain biking can be fun but equally a dangerous activity, so it is always important to take out the right travel insurance cover. Our Adventures policy is versatile, so it can cover your whole trip – including the mountain biking and even skiing if you try that too! But you can also take out activity cover only when you’re already abroad. So, let’s say you’re in Spain and decide to try skiing as well as mountain biking, you can take out our Adventures cover just to cover the activity*. We do always recommend taking out insurance as soon as you book, but you will have peace of mind knowing you have Adventures cover if you need it. Why not get a quote today?
*Please note, if you are already abroad, we can’t offer full travel insurance covering the whole trip, only part A of Adventures to cover while you do an activity.
