Unusual Winter Sports Cover by P J Hayman
P J Hayman’s specialist travel insurance portfolio covers many unusual winter sports activities. Taking part in winter sports is great fun, but as there may be some risk involved it’s important to have appropriate insurance, just in case it’s needed. Let’s take a look at some of the more unusual winter sports that our different policies can cover.
Getting Ready to Go
Before travelling on any trip, it’s important that you check the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) winter sports advice homepage. You’ll find several links to other specific advice pages, depending on what activity you’re doing and where you’re going. You’ll also be directed to the foreign travel advice page. This enables you to check whether your planned destination is currently considered to be a safe place to visit, as well as info on entry requirements, health risks and legal issues. Be aware that if the FCDO advises against all or all but essential travel to your holiday location, and you still choose to go, your travel insurance could be invalidated.
Once you’ve booked your trip, it’s important to take out travel insurance as soon as you can. You’ll have peace of mind that you’re covered, just in case something happens that could cause you to cancel or curtail your holiday. P J Hayman’s Travel Plus policy covers you for general travel insurance benefits plus winter sports activities for your entire trip, from when you leave your home to when you return to it.
Our Adventures policy has a unique feature in that you can take it out while already abroad, just to cover yourself for a specific activity. This could be useful if you are already on holiday and spontaneously decide to take part in a pursuit that isn’t covered by your main travel insurance policy. As long as you are still fit to travel, Adventures can provide cover for a wide range of activities, from winter sports to paragliding! If you’ve already left the UK, bear in mind that Adventures can only provide cover for your chosen, specific activity – you can’t add on general travel insurance benefits for the rest of your trip at this point (these can only be added if you purchase your Adventures policy before leaving the UK). If you require full travel insurance for your trip once you’ve left the UK and not just cover for the activity, our P J Hayman worldwide policy may be able to assist you.

- Personal liability of up to £2 million and personal accident of up to £5,000.

- Adventures can provide cover just while you participate in the activity, or for the whole trip as a full travel insurance policy (if taken out prior to commencement of the trip).

- If your activity requires you to wear safety equipment such as helmets, life jackets, safety goggles, and protective clothing, then these must be worn for the cover to be valid.
Unusual Winter Sport Activities Covered by Travel Plus
Please note that all winter sports activities covered under Travel Plus are automatically included on an annual policy. They will need to be added for an additional premium to a single-trip policy.
Ice Windsurfing*
One unusual winter sport activity that Travel Plus covers is ice windsurfing. This activity is the art of gliding on a frozen lake/river and letting your sail catch the wind. Think windsurfing but on ice! Ironically, the ice windsurfing competition has been running longer than the water equivalent!
Kick Sledding
This winter sport activity is also quite unusual. It is quite popular in Norway, where they have kick sledding championships. As the name suggests, the rider sits on a sled that is powered by using their feet to push off. Kick sledding can be great fun for the whole family, whatever their winter sports ability level!
Biathlon
Biathlon is usually a popular winter sport to watch during the Winter Olympics. It includes two sports – cross-country skiing and rifle marksmanship. Played by either a single competitor or relay team, each contestant aims to ski at a high speed (up to 20km). Afterwards, they must ensure they have enough stamina to hit five targets at a rifle range as quickly as possible.
Husky Dog Sledging*
Also called “mushing”, husky dog sledging is Alaska’s official sport. Learn from an expert how to drive a husky sled, and get to know a husky team of four to six dogs. Dog sled rides can last for days during an Arctic expedition. Alternatively, join a husky sledging activity at your resort to give yourself a short and sweet taster of the activity.
*Any activity marked with an asterisk does not include personal liability cover.
Unusual Winter Sport Activities Covered by Adventures
For our Adventures policy, you will need to select each individual activity you are participating in. Below are examples of some of the winter sports activities we can cover. Adventures can insure you for over 400 different activities, from Abseiling to Zorbing!
Ice Diving
While our Adventures policy can provide cover for lots of unusual winter sports activities, there are some limitations. For example, ice diving can only be covered if you are qualified or undertaking the activity with a qualified instructor. In ice diving, participants swim under the ice and resurface through a man-made hole. This activity is particularly dangerous and requires skilled personnel to participate. As such, the cover has a stipulation that you must be accompanied by a qualified ice diver, or else qualified yourself.
Snow Kiting
This unusual winter sport activity requires you to attach your snowboard or skis to your feet. Then, you use your kite to propel you along using the wind. Snow kiting is essentially a winter-sports evolution of kiteboarding. If you’re feeling adventurous, why not try it out on your next winter sports holiday?
Ski Yawing
Ski Yawing is an unusual winter sport where participants are towed on skis behind a horse or vehicle. This exciting experience is popular among thrill-seekers. It is important to arrange suitable insurance for activities like this, just in case you do have an accident while participating.
Heli-Skiing
Heli-skiing is an off-trail winter sport. Spend your time sliding downhill on skis or snowboard — after descending from a helicopter! No ski lift is involved. Lech Zürs Ski Resort in Austria is a unique location where experienced skiers can embrace heli-skiing in winter or early spring. A guide from the resort will pick the best slope and landing site from one of the two peaks available.
Big-Foot Skiing
In contrast to the name, big-foot skiing sounds more unusual than it actually is. It involves using smaller and shorter skis that measure 60-80 cm. What makes them quirky is their original, iconic design, which includes printed toes on the end of each ski. The advantage of big-foot skis is that they help you to manoeuvre quickly downhill because they are easier to control. They’re a great idea for newcomers to the slopes.
Unusual Winter Sports Travel Insurance
As we have mentioned, P J Hayman have two unique policies that can provide cover for unusual winter sports. These are our Adventures policy and our Travel Plus policy. While they are both ideal for unusual activities, if you have pre-existing medical conditions you may want to take a look at our Free Spirit policy. This can cover most medical conditions and also has an option to add on winter sports cover. So, whatever your holiday plans and circumstances, we will do our best to help you to travel, with confidence.
